![]() He let me assist in picking up those baby ostriches and moving them into the warm barn. Ostrich body temperature is important while they are young so the chicks had to be moved in at night to ensure they thrive. The ostriches were extremely welcoming and loved my glasses (so much that they pecked at them – they are attracted to shiny things). ![]() Next Ryan took me to see his newest hatchlings, some year old ostriches and some really large eggs that would be hatching soon. It was so neat to see these enormous birds walking by my windows. The breeding colony was right next to my parking spot in the shade. We fed a horse that he had recently rescued and then he showed me his ostrich colony that are used for breeding. We drove around on his gator and he toured me through the farm. Ryan invited me to follow him around on his evening chores to learn more about the ostriches and some of the uses for ostriches off the ranch. I was prepared for the heat and made sure I had plenty of water and fans to keep me cool. It was a terribly hot day and as with most Harvest Hosts, there are no hookups. I arrived in the late afternoon and was greeted by Ryan. Misty Morning is an ostrich ranch that was started in 2016 and the owner Ryan is super nice. I frequently head out on trips in my Airstream, LJ, to handle social media photography for our team and I usually try to find a fun experience nearby. In July, I had the opportunity to work with some clients in central North Carolina near Southern Pines. Not sure we’ll ever be able to use this again. With all of this December freezing weather I’m reminiscing back to the sultry days of summer. ![]() Wish I could take back my annual subscription purchase. But most likely, given the way campsites book out months in advance in California, Harvest Host will likely end up going the same route and be an exclusive book-in-advance-only system. I’d like to think this is just growing pains for Harvest Host and that eventually we can go back to easily booking same night stays. We ended up finding 1 host about 1 1/2 hrs out of the way, so we were able to experience at least 1 host site but for the price and promise, we were expecting a different travel experience buying into the Harvest Host subscription. Some hosts seemed apologetic about it while others seemed exasperated at the stress load of managing RV hosting. We paid the annual subscription and attempted to use the app along a drive, but after calling every host within a specific radius in California, no one has availability. Most sites were booked out for a month at least! However, it seems due to its growing popularity, it’s pretty much impossible to book same-day stays through Harvest Host anymore. Harvest Host was advertised as a way to stay at unique and safe locations while maintaining a style of roaming freedom that is part of the appeal of RV Camping.
